About Michigan’s Children: Michigan’s Children is the only independent statewide policy and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the best interests of children. We focus on reducing disparities in child outcomes such as the academic achievement gap, which are often the result of economic hardships and structural barriers related to race or ethnicity. Our mission is to build public will, influence public action, and secure support from public officials to prioritize the needs of the children who have been historically marginalized, including children of color, those from low-income and under-resourced households, and those involved in the foster and juvenile justice systems.

Position Overview: Michigan’s Children is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to join our team as the Vice President of Programs and Policy. This individual will play a key role in driving the development and execution of the organization’s public policy priorities, working to influence policies that directly impact children, youth, and families across the state.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Public Policy Development and Execution: Facilitate, support, and monitor the development and execution of the organization’s public policy goals and sequential activities.
  • Policy Analysis: Conduct analysis and develop public policy positions aligned with both short-term and long-term organizational goals.
  • Advocacy Strategy: Collaborate with the policy and communications teams to create and implement advocacy strategies.
  • Legislative Monitoring: Monitor state budget and legislative developments related to children, youth, and family programs. Prepare position papers, reports, and contribute to ongoing publications on public policy issues.
  • Fund Development: Support the organization’s fund development goals and strategies.
  • Leadership: Provide day-to-day leadership to staff, ensuring alignment with Michigan’s Children’s strategic plan and public policy goals.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as requested by the President/CEO.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Strong strategic skills and experience setting organizational or team agendas.
  • Deep knowledge of state and federal policymaking preferred.
  • Proven ability to communicate information to policymakers, advocates, and the media.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, and experience managing teams with varying experience and skill levels; experience at the senior level of a non-profit preferred.
